Madonna con la Santa Elizabetta, 1841

(Madonna and Saint Elisabeth, 1841)

The cleaning of this piece removed an old yellowing shellac varnish, which then revealed the original vibrant colours used by the artist. As you can see in the before photo, the paint had begun to crackle and was unstably attached to the canvas, consolidation using plexisol, heat and pressure was key to stabilising this work. The piece also had several holes and needed a complete relining.
